My name is Tawny Bigford. I’m 35, single, and I love hot showers. Seriously, all I wanted was a hot shower to start my day off right, but when I went to confront my landlady about the broken plumbing, I wound up talking to her corpse instead.

Now everyone thinks I’m to blame for her murder—not the best way to make an impression on the new neighbors, let me tell you. But how can I prove I’m innocent when I know practically nothing about the woman I supposedly killed?

Especially not the fact that she was the official Beech Grove Town Witch. Her former boss—a snarky black cat named Mr. Fluffikins—says I have to fill her vacated role until the real killer can be caught and brought to justice.

So, whether I like it or not, I’ve just been recruited to the Paranormal Temp Agency. Now I need to solve my landlady’s murder, figure out how to wield my newly granted powers, and maybe even find a way to fit in around here.

Yup. All in a day’s work for this novice witch.

Witch For Hire is a delightfully madcap introduction to the Paranormal Temp Agency series.  The fact is that I’m not going to feel comfortable saying much more than what you can read in the Cover Description Blurb for it would be so very easy to let spoilers slip – but then, that blurb certainly should capture your attention.

Tawny is relatively new in town and as a writer can pretty much set her own schedule and budget.  She’s renting a small house on the same property as her landlord who occupies the main house.  Her landlord is very much a grumpy hands-off, don’t bother me kind of woman.  Tawny makes no excuses for the fact that she loves her hot showers, it’s how she wakes up and at times how she figures out her stories… until the hot water heater decided that, oh, about five minutes was enough hot water and then froze her out.  Today she’s not going to take it anymore and heads directly from her freezing shower to her landlady’s house… to discover a very cold, very dead body.  And soon after, a very handsome police officer believing she’s a killer.  A great introduction to a handsome man… not.

This is the beginning of Tawny’s experience with the weird, odd, and paranormal aspects of this small town.  And a talking cat.  Yes.  A talking cat who is the boss of everyone she’s about to meet.

It turns out that her landlady was the town witch, and was murdered for her powers which would have transferred to the person closest to her at her death – since they believed, at first, that Tawny killed her well then she has the power now.  But, no.  Not a witchy twitch anywhere near Tawny.  Now, this council of paranormals has to find the killer, contain a witch’s powers, and deal with a non-witch in their midst who should not even know who they really are.  Mr. Fluffikins – the cat boss – has a plan and grants Tawny temporary powers to help in the investigation, basically taking the witch’s spot on council and protecting the town for now.  But the danger is far from over… as you will soon discover.

I had fun with Witch For Hire.  We meet a quite unique group of characters, watch an investigation take place with all kinds of complications, and sit back while enjoying Tawny’s particular brand of sass and snark.  I laughed quite a bit and scratched my head at times in a bit of a puzzle.  It’s not hard to figure out who the villain is but it’s not handed to you either.  I’m looking forward to my next visit in Psychic For Hire which is due out in December of 2020.

I own a Kindle edition of Witch For Hire.
