Brook Williams was raised to avoid drawing attention at all costs. At twenty-eight, she wonders if her mermaid mother’s paranoia isolated Brook and her siblings from society to a harmful extreme. When Brook intervenes to save a stranger from a careening truck, however, she quickly learns her mother’s obsessive concerns were entirely justified.
There’s just something about Brook that Cooper Koning can’t get off his mind. At first, he thinks his infatuation is due to the concussion sustained when she shoved him out of traffic. Then he realizes that she’s simply perfect…perfect to free him from a looming future being the king of Souersland. His candid Hail Mary proposal comes with a few strings attached: Brook marries him, he’s tossed from the line of succession, she gets a wad of cash for her struggling swim school, and they go their separate ways.
Of course, Cooper soon realizes that he’d be foolish to let her go.
Now that she’s left her little world, though, the mermaid skeletons in Brook’s closet can no longer stay hidden. Her mother left the sea to escape a burdensome duty, and now that duty is Brook’s. And in a strange twist of fate, that mantle may mean that it isn’t even Cooper’s human family who should rule Souersland, but Brook’s magical one.
Can a relationship built on fables endure? Or will the star-crossed spouses quickly decide their differences are too tremendous to overcome?

Title: Wish Out of Water
Series: Hooked #1
Author: Holley Trent
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Shifter Romance
Released: February 15, 2022
My Rating: 4 stars
Wish Out of Water begins the Hooked series with an incredibly intense, sexy, and emotional story that is far from what you might expect of mermaid society. But first of all… that cover is simply stunning – can’t wait to see the covers for the next books in this series if this one is any indication of how striking they will be.
To be frank, there isn’t a lot that I can add to the cover description blurb in order to keep this a spoiler-free review. If all of that doesn’t convince you to try this one, I don’t know what would.
Brook and her siblings have been protected by their mother their entire lives. They see that protection as paranoia, and maybe it is… perhaps it isn’t, only time and experience in the real world will tell. They have built a business and careers around their unique abilities in the water and for the most part, have been content living in the backwaters. Now thanks to one impromptu journey out into the world for necessities and the fact that Brook saved a human from certain injury, none of their lives will be quite the same again.
I liked both Cooper and Brook together and individually. And when the conflict between them came it was almost harsh in the misunderstanding that was caused. There are of course villains to be dealt with but not all on the same level of nastiness, some simply believe they are superior to every other life form around them which makes them nasty but not deadly. I enjoyed watching eyes be opened and reality accepted.
The story flows smoothly, the characters are interesting and unique, and there is enough background to the overall series included to make me need to pick up the next story to find out what happens. I had fun here, and that’s the entire point. If you love a good paranormal romance, some puzzles to figure out, and definitely some sizzle then you’ll want to pick up Wish Out of Water and get started on this series soon.
