Posted June 8, 2022 by Marsha in Dystopian, Owned, Paranormal / 0 Comments

In a futuristic society, fate is decided by genetics, and love is only for the elite.

The mark appeared while I slept and can’t be ignored. I must present myself to the Consulate and from there…

I don’t know what happens. While I’ve been taught the mark is an honor, I have no idea what it means. Questioning isn’t encouraged.

I must obey.

My change in status exposes me to a violent side of society that I never suspected. Brings me to a strange and wondrous place known as the surface, where I am immersed in a different way of living.

I discover pleasure. Am involved in intrigue. Learn about lies and different perspectives of the truth.

I must also make a choice between a man who is part of the caste system and the one who would destroy it.

This is an adult 18+ story that might contain language, possible violence, and/or sexual situations geared to an adult audience.

Title:  The Marked

Genre:  Paranormal Romance/Dystopian

My Rating:  4.5 stars

If I had just one word for this story it would be simply — wow.  As it is I’ll be very careful in what I say because it is easily spoiled by too much information before someone first picks it up to begin reading.

The Marked is an intricate look at what might happen in humanity’s future should we not take care of the planet right now.  Before you click away, this story is not preachy or political in any shape or form… but it does have the background of what happens when populations get out of control and climate changes are ignored for decades.  There are color levels to the caste system in this world Grey is the lowest functioning human designated to mundane, work-based life in the Caves.  Unless the females become Marked, it is then when a few lives change, for the better or for the worse is unique to each person – but they do have one purpose now, to breed.

There is so much that I loved about The Marked.  While entertaining, it also made me think about knowledge, and how one would react to a strange world without the basic knowledge that we grow up with as, well, naturally learning about our world.  To see it through the Heroine’s eyes is rather shocking as it is clearly made apparent that what I think of natural she sees as new, possibly frightening, or delightful.  There is an innocence, a naiveness that hovers over the Heroine even when she should have begun to learn things, like truth from a lie.  I’ll admit that I gave her the benefit of the doubt on every occurrence because I could not imagine “not knowing” something so basic to the point of fear of making the wrong choice.

At this point, I’m going to say you, the reader needs to discover this world first-hand, experience the innocence, the terror, the emotions… and one twist that I never in a lifetime would have seen coming.  I loved every moment spent in this world.  It is a standalone title, but I can see where it could branch off into other stories yet I’m not certain if they’d have that same shock moment with the information given in the Epilogue.

Pick this one up, don’t peek at the final page, and lose yourself in the future, with danger, love, betrayal, innocence… and that ending.  Just wow.

I own a Kindle edition of this title.
