Rebel Spell by Lisa Carlisle

A hapless witch. A broken vampire.

And a mysterious death that brings them under the same roof.

When I learn I’ve inherited a house in Salem, I’m sure it’s a mistake.

Besides, I have zero desire to return to a town where I’m an outcast.

The surprises continue when I meet my tenants, including a broody vampire and a foodie wolf shifter.

But I’m only staying around long enough to sell my long-lost aunt’s house.

Even when they convince me to go to a Halloween ball.

Even when I agree to pretend to be the vampire’s girlfriend.

Even when I discover his softer and oh-so-sexier side.

Because a witch without magic in Salem makes as much sense as a pig with wings. And I’ve never seen one fly.

Rebel Spell begins the Salem Supernaturals series with a charming, fun, smoldering, and dangerous tale that quickly caught my attention and held it through the ending… when I wanted more.

Nova is a witch who doesn’t seem to have magical abilities.  Well, she might have started a fire that terrified her parents when she was very young, but nothing since that event – and how can a witch who has no magic really call herself a witch?  She moved from her hometown of Salem (yes, that Salem) to New York City where she works for a children’s book publishing house and has a side job as a waitress – it is, after all, NYC where the rent is not cheap!  All that is about to change when she feels an unsettling punch to her nervous system that basically knocked her to the floor of the subway but, surprisingly, no one else noticed the sudden jolt.  Yet, that moment is the beginning of a strange and wonderful adventure for Nova – and decisions that will change her life are just ahead.

I enjoyed Nova and Diego’s story.  There is world-building, in the first story of a new series there has to be some.  I wasn’t overwhelmed by details, everything I needed to know flowed easily through the story’s narrative and dialogue.  Nova will discover that her aunt that she’s lost contact with over the years has died and left her estate, her home to Nova.  Oh, and her aunt was definitely a practicing witch who had three gentlemen renting rooms in the house… supernatural gentlemen, that is.  As Nova heads back to Salem to decide what to do with this sudden windfall and catch up with a good friend, Gianna (a half-siren), who owns a retro bar in Salem she’s about to walk right into danger and discover the love of her life… if she makes the choice of letting herself believe in love.  But did her aunt die of natural causes or did something magical steal her life from her.  This quick trip home suddenly becomes so much more.

Rebel Spell has everything I need to dive right into a new series.  A tempting mystery, danger, a tortured man who will do anything to win the hand of his lady, secondary characters who bring the world to life and knowing that I’ll devour their stories one day as well, and a heroine who has a lot to discover about herself while she chases down evil and falls in love.  I had a blast in the Salem Supernaturals world, and I can’t wait until I can return in June for Hot in Witch City.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
