Unfortunately, it appears that Eloise is to blame—or is she? Never one to shy away from a challenge—although her idea of a challenge usually involves tequila and a cartwheel—Eloise sets out to clear her name and, in the process, figure out where she truly belongs.

Murder and Mahjong is the first title in the Divine Place series which is marketed as a Paranormal Cozy Mystery, but could, in my opinion, also fall under the new genre of Paranormal Women’s Fiction since our heroine, Eloise, is of that age group and just might have some powers of her own.  It’s up to the interpretation of each reader, but I think this one falls in both genres.

I laughed my backside off with Eloise’s sudden demise into what she never, ever expected to exist.  A ‘holding’ place, so to speak, a supernatural purgatory, a limbo where demi-gods, myths, and the paranormal go when they die before being admitted to their ‘final’ destination.  Well, Eloise isn’t supernatural… but it seems she did manage to kill one when landing on Zeus upon arrival.  Who would have thought that a middle-aged woman dressed in a hot dog costume could take out one of the old gods?  Eloise isn’t buying it, and the longer she’s in Divine Place the more she’s convinced there is a murderer afoot.  And, lucky her, Zeus’s’ ex-wife Hera has just appointed her marshall with a side-kick to find out exactly how her annoying ex-husband was killed.

There are plenty of suspects, lots of funny and intriguing characters, some hotheads, some too-cool-for-school types, and the one lone human, Eloise.  Together most are wanting to discover who killed Zeus… and one who plans on them never figuring it out.  I had fun here and will be back in Divine Place for the rest of the series.  If you love snarky heroines, the unusual, and love to solve any puzzle then Murder and Mahjong would be perfect for you.
