This is where it all began, from a story in 2004 to an expanded Anniversary Edition in 2016, this is the story that begins a complex, intense, sexy, dangerous, and always entertaining world of Immortal Ops and all the series that have followed over the years and still keep coming even today.  I’ve read some, here and there, but decided to go back and follow the author’s recommended reading order since she should know best how to navigate this world.  And now that I’m a few books into that recommended order list I better understand why it’s suggested to read these series that way.  There are a lot of Humans and Paranormals populating these worlds, and we will run into some of them before their “actual” story is told.  So first impressions might not hold true when we know the whole story… or they might, I’ll let you discover that on your own.

‘Immortal Ops‘ begins the ‘Immortal Ops‘ series with Lukian’s (Luke) and Peren’s story with a fast-paced, action-packed, totally sexy as sin tale that drops us into a world full of Shifters, Fae, Vampires, and well, who knows what else is out there.  Luke is an old wolf shifter, actually the King of wolf shifters in America – although that’s a title he rarely, if ever uses.  He is the Captain of his Immortal Special Ops team, brothers in so many ways beyond family, and the challenges he and his team face are deadly, made up of things that most humans have no clue exists beyond a horror film.  But this assignment felt “off” from the start and only goes downhill and more wrong once he meets their target, Peren.

I was hooked on ‘Immortal Ops‘ from the start, and that tension, the intrigue, the need to know more never lessened even after the final page, for now, I needed to know even more… which lead to binge-reading this series.  Peren is not fully human but she is Luke’s mate, a fact that only intensifies his determination to find out who is actually behind this assignment that made no sense from the start.  I loved Peren and her friends.  They are their own ‘pack’ and it shows in their devotion to each other.  Learning what Peren is, why she’s been targeted, and how her future with Luke can be made possible are all major parts of this story – and since I don’t willingly do spoilers, I’ll let you discover those reasons on your own.

I liked all of these characters I met in this first story and being the Shifter addicted reader that I am I also knew that not everything we read in the introduction truly tells the tale of the secondary characters until their own books are written.  So, I’m immensely curious to discover these characters’ true selves as time moves on for them.  The villains are vile and various, but the discovery of who and why are left to almost the end – and then the reveal made sense but also reminded me to pay more attention to those inconsequential people we meet in any story.  I enjoyed myself immensely and will be following all the stories in this world – and hope there will always be just “a bit more” to come.
