Earth Spells Are Easy by Renee George

As a forty-three-year-old, newly divorced, single mom, I know two things for certain, starting over sucks, and magic isn’t real. At least that’s what I thought. I mean, starting over really does stink, but when it comes to magic, I have to rethink everything.

I’ve spent the last year since my ex left me going through the motions. Get up. Work. Care for a grumpy teenager. Cook dinner. Go to bed. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Nothing changes… Until it does.

After bidding on a box of old books at an estate auction, I’m experiencing changes.

And I’m not talking about menopause.

My garden gnome Linda has come to life. No, really. Her name is Linda, and she never shuts up. A chonky cat with a few secrets of his own has adopted me. And a gorgeous professor of the occult tells me I’m a witch.

Right now, I’m not sure who’s crazier—me, Linda, or the hottie professor.

If this is my new reality, it’s nature’s cruel midlife trick. I’m learning fast that earth spells might be easy, but they aren’t cheap. All magic exacts a toll, and if I don’t master the elements, the elements will be the death of me.

Literally.

My Rating:  4 stars

Earth Spells Are Easy begins the Grimoires of a Middle-aged Witch series with a delightful, funny, magical journey with Iris as she faces some… unique challenges in life after her unexpected divorce.  Sure she might be free but she’s also confused, hurt, and most definitely at a crossroads.  One trip to an estate sale, one extraordinary book, and an introduction to a professor of the occult will spark magic within her that she’s never believed in, reveal that she is indeed a later life witch who is coming into her powers, and will bring not only unusual creatures into her life but danger as well.

I had fun with Iris, Keir, Linda (the garden gnome), and Bob (the imp/cat familiar)… and this story is a great introduction to this world as we watch Iris, with disbelief, encounter all sorts of new abilities.  There might be romance in her future but for right now she’s trying to understand and get her Earth magic under control.  Plus, fight off some really bad elementals who are after her magic.

I loved Iris’ snarkiness and often found myself chuckling out loud at her comments and antics.  Linda, well, has exactly the personality I’d imagine a garden gnome would have… should one suddenly come to life in front of me.  And Keir, I can’t wait to see how things are going to turn out with Keir as the series moves forward.  Earth Spells Are Easy was definitely an entertaining few hours spent in a world that is a bit topsy-turvy for Iris until she begins to believe what her eyes (and skills) are showing her.  If you love PWF then you’ll want to check out the start of this new series.  I’ve got the next story already downloaded and ready to dive back into this world.

I own a Kindle edition of this title.
