I first encountered Vamps (the unique Goth/Paranormal club) in Inflame in the Bad Alpha Dads line, so when I found Cursed I got the chance to go back to the very beginning of the story of cursed gargoyles and how these brothers ended up being the guardians at Vamps.  And like any other series that isn’t brand spanking new, I’m still enjoying discovering this world since I’m a first-time reader here… which is why I’m careful of spoilers in any review.  So, let’s go back to the very beginning of how Lucan, Danton, and Mattias ended up locked in their gargoyle forms except for a short timeframe when someone is in danger and they need to help… or when they find their mate.

Cursed is a short story, basically an introduction to the series and how the brothers ended up at vampire Michel’s club Vamps.

Lucan wasn’t ready to settle down, he was young (for a gargoyle) and enjoyed the ladies far too much to limit himself to one woman forever.  And, besides, he hadn’t met his mate, the only woman that would truly change that attitude of his.  So his fling with Veronica was just that, in his mind… but in her mind, they had the love of a lifetime and she wanted to run away to begin their lives together far from family interference.

Unfortunately, when Lucan was talking about this with his brothers, in typical male fashion, Veronica overheard them thinking she was being disrespected or made fun of by the men… so she did what any witch would do – she cursed them to be stuck in their gargoyle forms unless danger was present and they needed to step in to help – but only for 24 hours then it was back to stone form for them.

I enjoyed the world-building that the author was able to do in such a quick story (one of the many reasons I return to her work often).  Understanding why our gargoyle guardians of Vamps have French accents, how they met the powerful vampire Michel and made the trip across the ocean to America was delightful fun for me.  I’m a reader who craves to know why, how, what, when, where, and how could you!  So this short story satisfied that need of mine.  I had fun here, and that really is the entire point.  You might not find a true romance here with the introduction of Lucan, Danton, and Mattias… but you will fall in love, and that’s almost as good as we head into their full-length stories.

I own a Kindle edition of Cursed.
