Bewitched by Darynda Jones

Forty-something Defiance Dayne only recently discovered she comes from a long line of powerful witches. Added to that was the teensy, infinitesimal fact that she is what’s called a charmling. One of three on the entire planet. And there are other witches who will stop at nothing to steal her immense power, which would basically involve her unfortunate and untimely death.

No one told her life after forty would mean having to learn new life skills—such as how to dodge supernatural assassins while casting from a moving vehicle—or that the sexiest man alive would be living in her basement.

Whoever said life begins at forty was clearly a master of the underappreciated and oft-maligned understatement.

My Rating:  4.5 stars

The second story, Bewitched, in the Betwixt & Between series drew me in rather quickly (once again) and gave me an enjoyable, chuckle-filled ride throughout.  Yet, while we learned a few new things about Defiance, met some decidedly nasty villains, I didn’t feel that it moved the series along very much… but that ending sets up the next story, Beguiled, perfectly, and now I need to know what happens next.

The tough part of this review is the fact that I’m really not comfortable talking about much that happens within Bewitched – in my view, to do so would involve spoilers that will (or may) ruin this book for a first-time reader.

So.  The safe highlights.  We learn a bit more about Percy (the house) and it is very protective of Defiance in a very unique way.  Roane gets some more well-deserved page time as his relationship with Defiance heats up and a few unusual situations toss even more clues our way.  We do get an answer about Gigi (her ghostly grandmother) and Defiance – and frankly, that broke my heart for them both in many ways.  Defiance’s fathers are as caring, funny, and unique as ever, and her BFF, Annette, is up to her usual crazy antics.  The villains (and there is more than one set) add tensions, and answers in an odd way… but as a charmling, Defiance will always be facing some sort of danger.

I enjoyed every moment of time spent back in this world, and I’m definitely waiting for February of 2021 for the next book – yet, there is still a feeling that I got to know Defiance and crew better, but none of the many mysteries to be solved lasted long or held my attention completely.  I guess I was simply looking for something that was never intended to be there, and that is entirely on me, not the author.

If you’re looking for a series that is full of laughter, chuckles, shenanigans, magick, and a touch of romance then Betwixt & Between is a series you’ll want to get started on… now.
