Moving home isn’t in the game plan.

Ava Harper had aspirations for her forties. None included using her Necromancy powers to solve murders.

As much as she doesn’t want to move back to Maine, she can’t spend another day in the empty, depressing house with the memory of her dead husband. It’s time for a new plan.

Time to start over and learn to live again.

When she arrives to clean out her Auntie’s house, old memories settle in. She remembers why she loves it there. It’s home. However, things change. People change and leave. Shipton Harbor isn’t the small town she grew up in.

When an old friend turns up dead, Ava must delve deep into the powers she’d repressed all her adult life to find the killer. Only a necromancer could’ve killed her friend.

Now she must be the necromancer who finds his murderer.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from A Ghoulish Midlife, after all, the necromancers I’ve run into in books haven’t been the, well, friendliest folks.  But, I trust Lia Davis to deliver a good story no matter the subject her main character holds dear.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I chuckled throughout Ava’s tale – and now how quickly I want to return for even more.

The thing that did surprise me was how many characters there are in this story – and how they all flow easily, naturally throughout, and not once did it feel overcrowded.  It should have, but it did not and that, to me, is some pretty impressive writing.  I could call some of these folks secondary characters, yet they each had a specific role to play in this story – and perhaps in the series to come.  I cannot imagine this story without a single one of them so that tells me that they were all vital.

As Ava returns to her hometown to possibly sell the house that’s been in her family for generations she’s about to discover some changes happening naturally in her life.  She’s been a widow for five years now, and not a day goes by that she doesn’t miss her beloved husband.  Her son is off to college and she should sell her aunt’s home, well, her home now although it will always feel like her aunts.  Trouble is, the house isn’t about to be sold – strange happenings are going on with new folks in town, old friends, old enemies are not acting as expected and something weird is in the air.  Creepy.  Ava’s visit home isn’t going to go as she expected it to, and now she has more questions than answers.  Especially as danger comes visiting.

I had fun with A Ghoulish Midlife.  It’s full of chuckles, snark, laughter, emotions, and a few puzzles.  I already have plans to read the short novella tomorrow – that’s how quickly I want to get back into this world.  This looks like a series that will keep readers on their toes!

I own a Kindle edition of A Ghoulish Midlife.
